Reunion Group Explained

The reunion group is characterized by being:

  • Voluntary – It must be something you want to do.

  • Based on Friendship – It is not just a coming together of a group of people, but a meeting of people who are already close friends.

  • Personal and Intimate – It is not a discussion group, but one where close friends come together to share their personal and joint spiritual life.

  • Small in Size – A large group can hardly be close. Three to six members is an ideal size.

  • Regular – It meets on a regular basis, preferably weekly, and has a fixed membership of friends.

  • Persevering – The members of a reunion group must be committed to meeting together consistently to enrich each other's spiritual life and to participate in meetings even when they feel "down" or "turned off' by a particular meeting or friend.

We bring to the reunion group:

  • Idealism – A spirit of hope for the fullness of God's grace found through praying and sharing together.

  • Self-surrender – a sense of commitment to other members of the group and a willingness to share your life with them.

  • Charity – an attitude of love for one another and for our fellow man through one another.

In a reunion group we share:

  • Our prayer life – those aids which have nourished our vital union with Christ since the last reunion. This would include church services, communion, prayers, etc.

  • Our life of action – the apostolic endeavors we have engaged in, both individually and as a member of this group. We share both our apostolic successes and our failures to provide encouragement to others and to obtain their comfort. Many reunion groups also have an apostolic action that is unique to the group and form apostolic action plans as a part of each reunion group.

  • Our awareness of Christ – the moment since our last reunion in which we are most aware of Christ and our closeness or distance from Him.

The reunion group should begin and end with a period of prayer to invoke the Holy Spirit to enlighten us in the reunion group and in the Christian life that we strive to strengthen through our reunion groups. A reunion group can last as little as 20 minutes or as long as a full evening, depending on the wishes of the members of the group. The essential element is not the expenditure of time, but the sharing, openness, and love that are part of the meeting.
